“Yalla” Empowers Youth Through PRA Training to Lead Community-Based Research

Between July and September 2017, the second phase of a comprehensive youth empowerment initiative was launched, focusing on capacity building and community-based research. Following a year of preparation and engagement, youth participants entered an intensive training program centered on Participatory Rapid Appraisal (PRA) techniques.

Delivered in multiple waves, the training combined theoretical instruction with practical application. Participants were equipped with a range of qualitative research tools—such as interviews, community mapping, observation, and focus group facilitation—enabling them to conduct structured fieldwork in their local communities.

The research activities culminated in the development of detailed community needs assessments, reflecting evidence-based insights into local challenges. These assessments not only informed future programming but also marked a significant step in transforming participants from community members into informed local researchers and advocates.

This phase was a critical milestone in the broader initiative, demonstrating the value of participatory methods in amplifying youth voices and strengthening grassroots development efforts.
